“A smooth sea never made a skillful mariner.”
— English proverb
The above quote really hit me this morning. How often do we say “if only things were a bit easier”, “if only work was a little less stressful”, “if only the hours were a bit shorter”? The fact of the matter is, we all enjoy an environment we find easy – we can complete the tasks without too much exertion, we understand our role and place in the system, and we can answer any questions we get asked. The real problem with that is – as the above quote says – calm waters don’t produce great sailors.
Why Will You Grow?
In order to produce momentum, you need a force. Survival is a great one – try sailing into a storm and doing nothing different then you normally would on calm waters – chances are you will drown in the process. When an outside force is introduced into your life, you have no choice but to react to it, as you should.
There’s not a lot to write about this one, so I won’t – my point is, that you need to go find something hard, and do it – if you don’t, you won’t grow mentally, physically or emotionally. If you find your job easy – guess what? You aren’t growing much by doing it. I encourage everyone to go find something they find challenging, and take that challenge!
